手電筒的英文是flashlight，這個字同時也可解釋為「（手機或相機中的）閃光燈」，要注意「手電筒」在英式英文裡是torch (n)，在美式英文中torch則是「火把」的意思，因此奧運開幕式的火炬也就稱為Olympic Torch。

最近有實驗發現音樂能增強語言能力，因為它強化聽覺皮質的敏感度。旋律可以增加工作記憶的強度，而工作記憶是認知能力的根本（訊息進入大腦後，需先經過工作記憶的處理，才能進入長期記憶）。

英文發音最小單位，稱為音素（phoneme）。而音素又有母音（vowel）與子音（consonant）之分。兩者差別在於，發母音時，氣沒有受到任何阻礙；發子音時，氣會受到舌頭、牙齒、嘴唇等等的阻礙。以中文為例，「ㄅㄨ」中的「ㄅ」是子音，而「ㄨ」則是母音。而每個單字，都至少會有一個母音。
